Dubai:Virat Kohli and his team are on the verge of a group stage exit after their second successive defeat in the ongoing T20 World Cup, prompting the cricket world to criticize the team’s strategy.

Former captain Sunil Gavaskar feels Rohit Sharma’s move to bat at number three against New Zealand indicates that the Indian team management did not trust the star opener to face Trent Boult’s inswing delivery.

Rohit could be regarded as one of India’s greatest players in limited-overs cricket and is a strong contender to lead India in the shortest format of the game if Virat Kohli steps down after the ongoing T20 World Cup. Ishan Kishan was given the opportunity to open the innings against New Zealand on Sunday while Rohit was dropped at number three.

At the start of the innings, Rohit looked uncomfortable against the ball coming in, while it was the same against Pakistan. The move to open the innings from Ishan failed. The entire batting order failed, due to which the team could only score 110 runs for seven wickets in 20 overs. New Zealand then achieved the target in 14.3 overs.

Rohit Sharma

Gavaskar told ‘India Today’, “Ishan Kishan is a hit or die player and it is better to have a batsman like him bat at number four or five. He can play according to the situation of the match at that time. What has happened now is that Rohit Sharma has been told that we don’t trust you to face left-arm pacer Trent Boult.

He said, “If you do this to a player who has been playing for a long time at some place, then even himself will think that maybe he is not capable of it. We would have appreciated if Ishan Kishan had scored around 70. But when this move doesn’t work, you criticize.” Ishan, who was included in the team as a reserve opener, opened the innings with KL Rahul. Captain Kohli also came down a place to bat at number four.

Gavaskar does not agree with the change in the batting order. “I don’t know if it is a fear of failure but we know that whatever changes he made in the batting order today did not work,” he said. ”

Ishan Kishan

Gavaskar said, “Rohit Sharma is such a great batsman and he was sent at number three. Kohli, who scored so many runs at number three, himself landed at number four. A young player like Ishan Kishan was entrusted with the responsibility of opening the innings.” After two consecutive defeats, India, considered to be the top contenders for the title before the start of the tournament, are in danger of being eliminated from the group stage itself.

former india opener Virender Sehwag Said that India was very disappointed. The New Zealand team was fantastic. India’s ‘body language’ was not good, the shot selection was poor and like on some occasions in the past, New Zealand have almost made sure that we will not make it to the next stage. This will hurt India and it is time for serious introspection.

former Indian fast bowler Irfan Pathan Said that in any major tournament you don’t change your XI after just one match and you can’t get the desired results. Players need stability and I am surprised that this happened when some big names were making decisions. New Zealand did a great job, you were great today. And Team India needs to unite and do charisma. Time is running out.

Former batsman known for his artistic batting VVS Laxman Said that Team India will have to bear the loss of this defeat. He was hesitant to bat, his shot selection could be questioned. New Zealand bowled brilliantly but India made their job easy. The dream of making the semi-finals does not seem to be coming true due to the fall in the net run rate.

former cricketer madanlal Said that it was unfortunate as in both these matches India appeared more impatient than usual. If you don’t score runs then there will be no chance for you in the match. A target of 111 runs can be defended only if there is charisma. India did not get any chance in both the matches. In this format, if you don’t dominate in the beginning, it is difficult.

Indian bowler Harbhajan Singh Said that do not take a hard stand about your players. Yes we know him for playing better cricket. Players suffer the most after such results. But New Zealand did a great job to win the match. He performed brilliantly in all departments.
