Abu Dhabi: Senior Pakistan batsman Shoaib Malik on Monday said that his team’s momentum in the T20 World Cup with a thumping win over India in the first match has given their team a good run. Pakistan defeated New Zealand and Afghanistan after a ten-wicket win over India. Now, after defeating Namibia on Tuesday, the team will reach the semi-finals.
Malik said in a pre-match press conference, “To be honest, when the tournament starts against a big team and you win that match, everything goes well in the dressing room.
He said, ‘We got the rhythm too. In the first match, every team comes out with the intention of getting the momentum by giving the best performance. Malik, who has played 119 T20Is for Pakistan in the last 15 years, said the way the players have handled the pressure is commendable.
Significantly, against India, Shoaib Malik just stood like a fielder. Neither captain Babar gave him the ball nor did he need to bat.
But in the next match he played the role of a finisher against New Zealand. He scored 26 runs in 20 balls which included 2 fours and 1 six. Against Afghanistan too, he scored 9 runs in 15 balls with 1 four and 1 six but he was out two overs before the match.
Malik is one of the few modern Pakistani cricketers in whose presence Pakistan won two ICC tournaments like T20 and Champions Trophy. Shoaib Malik was included in Pakistan’s T20 World Cup squad in place of Sohaib Maqsood, who had failed to recover from a lower back injury.
He has retired from Tests (35 matches) and ODIs (287 matches). He scored 7534 runs in 285 matches and took 158 wickets.
In 2010, Indian tennis sensation Sania Mirza broke off her engagement with her childhood friend Sohrab Mirza in Hyderabad and married Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik. Shoaib’s entire family lives in Karachi, but after marriage, Sania and Shoaib shifted to their Dubai home. Now both of them also have a son.
