Abu Dhabi: The national selection committee of the Indian team is expected to meet in the next few days to decide the squad for the upcoming home series against New Zealand. The Chetan Sharma-led selection panel will also select the new T20 captain in the meeting as current skipper Virat Kohli has already announced not to lead the team in this format after the ongoing T20 World Cup here. In this context, this meeting will be very important.

The seniors are likely to be rested for these three T20 Internationals against New Zealand. Actually the players have been playing cricket continuously since April 2020. First IPL, then World Test Championship (WTC) final, Test series in England, then IPL and now T20 World Cup.

Since Kohli has only announced to step down from the captaincy of the T20 format, there could be a discussion on whether the captaincy needs to be split for the white-ball format. Currently the chairman of the selection panel, Chetan Sharma and member Abe Kuruvilla are in Dubai, while the rest of the members are in India.

According to media reports, openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul are at the forefront of the captaincy race. The new captain’s first series is going to be from New Zealand which will start from November 17.

Rohit Sharma’s performance in T20 Internationals has been commendable. He has scored 22 fifties and 4 centuries in 105 T20 innings. Due to this, he has so far scored 2878 runs in this format with an average of 32.

On the other hand, if we talk about KL Rahul, in 47 innings he has scored 1578 runs with an average of 38. Out of this, he has scored 12 fifties and 2 centuries.

Both the batsmen are also the captains of their respective franchises in the IPL. Rohit Sharma is the captain of Mumbai Indians while KL Rahul has captained Punjab Kings. Although Rohit Sharma has made Mumbai Indians champion in IPL 5 times. Because of this, Rohit’s edge is feeling heavy on Rahul.

It is noteworthy that players selected for the tour may be asked to report by November 10, as they will have to undergo a mandatory five-day quarantine before a few days of practice. On the other hand, the formalities for the appointment of the new head coach of India are yet to be completed. There is a possibility that Rahul Dravid, who has already applied for the post, may also join the team by then. There is still doubt about the members of the support staff.

The deadline for applications for the Indian team’s head coach post is understood to have ended on October 26, but the deadline for submitting applications for batting, bowling and fielding coaches is November 3. It is not clear whether the interviews will be completed by November 10. It is learned that applications were also received from some non-cricketers. The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) would also have to interview the head coach, but that too has not been created. In fact, one of its members, Madan Lal, has recently expired as a member in terms of age limit. In view of all these things, BCCI will have to take many decisions next week.

It is noteworthy that on November 17, the T20 series between India and New Zealand will start in Jaipur. The second T20 will be played in Ranchi on 19 November and the third in Kolkata on 21 November. This will be followed by two Test matches, which will be part of the current cycle of the World Test Championship (WTC). The first Test will be played in Kanpur from November 25 to 29 and the second in Mumbai from December 3 to 7.
