MumbaiThe much-awaited match between India and Pakistan in the ongoing T20 World Cup was watched by a record 16.77 million viewers, making it the most-watched T20 International cricket match ever. This has been claimed by the official broadcaster of the contest.

According to a Star India release, till last week, the total reach of the T20 World Cup in the first 12 matches of the qualifiers and Super 12 stage was 23.80 million viewers.

The semi-final of the 2016 T20 World Cup played between India and West Indies was the most watched T20 match before, which was watched by 1.36 million viewers.

According to the release, “The much awaited India-Pakistan match, which took place on October 24 with 16.77 million spectators, is now the most-watched T20 International match. This surpassed the record held for the 2016 ICC World T20 semi-final between India and West Indies. The arch-rival teams of India and Pakistan were face to face in the ICC tournament after two years.

India and Pakistan started their campaign against each other on 24 October with Babar Azam’s team defeating Virat Kohli’s team by 10 wickets. This was Pakistan’s first win over India in any World Cup. Earlier, Pakistan had lost to India in 5 T20 World Cup matches. But this time Pakistan’s upper hand was very heavy and this match proved to be one-sided.

India set a target of 152 runs to Pakistan. Virat Kohli scored 57 runs but the other batsmen were disappointed. When Pakistan’s batting started, there was dew on the ground and the Pakistani openers did not have any problem in getting the ball to the boundary line.

Pakistan has made it to the semi-finals of the ICC T20 World Cup while India crashed out of the group stage itself.

Looking at the final points table, Pakistan won all their five matches and topped Group 2 with 10 points. Pakistan’s run rate was +1.583. Whereas India had to wait a long time for its first victory. They lost to Pakistan and New Zealand by 10 and 8 wickets.

India won the match against Afghanistan by 66 runs and opened their account. After this, India beat Scotland by 8 wickets and Namibia by 9 wickets to collect a total of 6 points. India’s run rate may have been +1.747 but it was the third team in its group. Due to which she failed to make it to the semi-finals.
