Dubai:History was against New Zealand, the T20 World Cup semi-file of the year 2016 and then the heart-breaking defeat of the 2019 ODI World Cup, which till date, how many runs and how many wickets, no one can tell. Despite this, New Zealand has reached the final after defeating England by 5 wickets, then the reason behind it is Darrell Mitchell who started the opening batting for New Zealand in this tournament itself.

The smart innings that Darrell Mitchell played also assumes significance as he saw Kane Williamson’s wicket fall cheap in front of him. At that time, England had almost thought that now New Zealand’s spine had been sent, so the match was almost over but Mitchell’s intentions were different.

He just kept rotating the strike and when the right time came, he put the batting in fourth gear. Cricket fans will be surprised to know that Darrell Mitchell, who scored an unbeaten 72 off 47 balls with 4 fours and 4 sixes, was able to score 40 runs in 34 balls at one time.

He completed his half-century in 42 balls by hitting a six off Adil Rashid. But Jimmy Neesham, who scored a quick run in the same over, was out. For New Zealand, the figure had come down from 60 runs in 5 overs to 20 runs in 2 overs.

From here, Darrell Mitchell stepped on the accelerator and hit two sixes and a four in Chris Woakes’ over to give the team a place in the final for the first time. Interestingly, New Zealand got Mitchell open for the first time in this tournament and the result went in New Zealand’s favour.

Mitchell batted wonderfully: Williamson

After reaching the final of the T20 World Cup after registering a five-wicket win against England on Wednesday, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson said, “We have played each other on so many occasions, we knew it was going to be a great match.” Well done and in fact our entire team played a great game.

Williamson heaped praise on Daryl Mitchell, who scored a match-winning 72 not out, saying that Mitchell batted wonderfully at the top. His true character stood before all of us today. T20 cricket relies on surfaces, sides with short boundaries and many other things that make a difference in the game. We had wickets in hand which were really important. Neesham came in and hit several big shots and changed the pace of the game.

Mitchell, who became the player of the match, said, “It was a little difficult at first. The pitch was a bit challenging, especially in the beginning. With the new ball the ball was not coming on the bat properly. However, Conway batted well afterwards. Neesham really helped pull the game on our side. We knew we needed one or two big overs. Having my father here, having traveled half the world, is a great experience for me.
